Cactus Necklace: Behind the Design

There are some shapes that are iconic. The cactus rocks the spiky silhouette so well that Lee just had to make it into a pendant to adorn ourselves this summer! If you haven’t heard (maybe you live under a rock?) succulents are the plant of the moment but it was actually this happy card from a friend that inspired the new designs ...

We love cacti because they are easy to look after, true but after tens of thousands of years of existing alongside humans they are recognised to be pretty special. They symbolise warmth, protection and endurance and the cactus flower is a symbol of a mother's unconditional love because it can endure and thrive in harsh conditions. Since, the cactus has come to represent all maternal love.

Cacti are called ‘sabbar’ in Arabic, which neatly also refers to a person of endurance and patience. The Aztecs likened the bright red fruit of opuntias (known as prickly pears) to human hearts and associated the juice with quenching thirst and thus giving life. Tradition continuing for centuries later, what we know now as dragon fruit is from a cactus and parts of cacti are eaten around the world where they grow.

But before you go frying up your windowsill succulents, you should hold off as several types have been found to contain potent psychoactive agents. Instead save yourself the trouble and go gooey eyed for these new necklaces instead. They come in gold and silver, as well as two different sizes on longer and shorter chains. What is not to love?

We think they will be the next big thing… so please get sharing your pictures on Insta when it arrives.

PS. We are not to blame for any overwhelming desire to buy in both colours. This is an entirely natural feeling, we assure you.
