I moved into a new studio in February 2016, so I thought it would be the perfect time to show you around!
My studio is situated in Craft Central on Clerkenwell Green, right next to Hatton Garden – London’s jewellery quarter - and I share the building with lots of amazingly talented jewellers like Wendy Ramshaw, Myia Bonner and Sarah Herriot to name a few. Plus setters, mounters and jewellery specialists, and other creatives who do anything from fixing priceless Stradivarius violins, to potters, glass engravers and leather goods creators.
We have a gorgeous roof terrace for when the sun comes out and the beer needs drinking on a Friday evening (it’s a hard life, but someone’s got to do it!)
My second love after jewellery is interior design, so this was my opportunity to make a studio space that is colourful, creative and inspires me every day – it really is a joy to come to work and do what I love, so here’s a few images of where all your pieces are handmade by me and my team…
I sourced the delicious fabric from Mexico and re-upholstered the seats and cushions by hand – with utube tutorials there really isn’t anything you can’t create yourself, I find, and I love a new challenge.
I found my desk dumped outside on the street, covered in thick maroon lacquer and very unloved – so I spent a weekend stripping and varnishing it and bringing the gorgeous maple wood underneath back to life – it’s my favourite thing in the office. On the desk is my red lip phone and three little succulent plants with faces on them designed by my Columbian potter friend Kinska Cha – so cute and greenery is so calming.
Above my desk I’ve created a little ‘inspiration board’ of some of my favourite artists, designers and wonderful cards I’ve received from friends and customers that inspire me – my brain works better when it’s surrounded by colour and fun things, so this really helps remind me why I do what I love.
I’m so happy here, I finally have a small but perfectly formed space to design and make, plus I’ve now got four very special people working with me who I couldn’t be without to help make the jewellery and grow the business (more on them in a post later this month). In the corners near the windows are my two jewellery benches, where all your lovely jewellery gets made by myself, Josh and Jo.
Above my bench is a library of all my jewellery and art books for reference and to inspire, mixed in with a collection of little crazy things I’ve amassed on my travels, including the big brass pineapple (had to be done!) and a little child’s Chinese New Year celebration silk hat I found in a Belgian antiques shop a few years ago – it’s said to ward off evil spirits, but I just like his cheeky grin.
The big plywood Stag head ornament sits between the desks plus my jewellery cabinets, so customers, stylists and fashion editors can come view my collections. And last but not least... in the other corner is the large jewellery bench, full of tools, hammers and big machinery for bending, twisting and polishing silver pieces.
It’s a noisy, lively and fun studio and if you ever fancy coming to talk to me about a bespoke piece, or to collect something in person and have a look at the jewellery, then contact me here to arrange a time – we can have a cuppa and a chat.
