As appreciators of long lasting and beautifully crafted items, it would have been amiss to not feature one of Savile Row’s first female tailors, Alexandra Wood. Want the man in your life to look their absolute best at your wedding? Maybe they need to look fresher and sharper? Alexandra has dressed the likes of Rory Bremner, Tony Parsons and Chuka Umunna MP, landing him the status of one of GQs ‘Best Dressed Men’ (more than once)! Alexandra also recently won the award for Best Groomswear Retailer by You and Your wedding magazine. But probably the best credit to Alexandra’s business are the dozens of testimonials from well-known names for her perfectly fitted suits and friendly approach.
We wanted to pick her brains, hearing from the woman herself what it is she loves about designing bespoke tailoring and any advice to inspire us on a dreary February afternoon.
What do you love most about your work?
I love meeting new people and making a big change to the way they dress. It’s such a pleasure to see someone's look take such a big turnaround.
With Valentine’s on the horizon, can you give any advice for women buying gifts for their partners? What touches can you add to a great looking suit?
Mostly our female customers purchase a gift voucher for their husband/boyfriend to leave me to design them something special. An embroidered message can be requested in their suit, which will be a forever reminder of the lovely gift.
What in 2016 are you most excited about?
We are opening a new shop in Bishops Stortford, which was notoriously a Tailors for over 400 years and is one if not the oldest Menswear shop in the world. The shop will be a source of Men's style inspiration, accessories, new styles and wedding hires and bespoke suits/clothing.
I'm also getting married this May and that of course is very exciting and I the question I keep getting asked is am I making the suits…Absolutely is the answer! I'm going for something a little different to what you usually see, so I can’t wait.
Your website speaks for itself – you’ve tailored loads of successful names. Who has been your favourite person to work with?
I genuinely enjoy working with each of my customers, the person who is always my favourite to work with is usually someone who has no idea just how good they can look in a suit that is the right colour, fit and style for them.
We’d love to know, which of the Lee Renee collections do you most relate to and why?
And finally - to pass on the love - what is the most inspirational advice you’ve been given?
Create a niche and stay true to yourself.
