There’s a definite chill in the air this morning, and for the first time in this very mild September I’ve started to pack away some of my pretty summer pieces that would feel oh so wrong to wear in the cooler days ahead.
September is about the all-important transition from summer to autumn; we hang up the light, swishy fabrics in favour of layering and chunky knits. Of course, you can work your summer wardrobe straight into autumn by making a few changes here and there – many of our favourite summer items can easily be transformed into autumn-ready fashion. Here are a few of our favourite transitional items and September staples:
Maxi Skirts – in summer they provide us with a cool alternative to trousers and leggings, but don’t pack them away just yet! Maxi skirts can easily be carried along to autumn by pairing them with a cute knit and layering up with some tights for the colder days. They are effortlessly chic and a lovely alternative to trousers this autumn.
Cute Shirts – this summer was all about cute prints and pastels, especially when it came to shirts and blouses. Although shirts are typically lightweight and cool, you can easily carry them through to autumn by layering a simple knitted jumper over the top. This works well for collared shirts and is an easy, go-to look for autumn. For accessories, why not try out some vintage style collar tips as an easy way to jazz up your outfit?
The Kimono Craze – if you didn’t wear a kimono this summer, where were you? This kimono trend was popular amongst celebrities and fashionistas and from high end designers to high street stores, the kimono craze was in full swing. This autumn, hunt down a knitted or jersey kimono – they are great everyday staples that can add an extra layer of warmth and come in a great range of styles. Bored of floral prints? Try out something knew like a plain block colour or an Aztec print!
Booted out – it’s time to put away the sandals and flip flops for another year and embrace the plethora or gorgeous boots on offer from designers and the high street. Okay, so this is a practical staple, after all – who wants cold and wet feet? However – with some stunning boot collections on the shelves, it’s no surprise that boots, booties and more boots are one of the biggest September staples for your wardrobe. Whether you want a pair of knee high riding boots, some classic Chelsea boots, a simple pair of heeled booties or some leather biker boots – embrace them this autumn!
